Spoon filling a glass of chocolate coffee protein shake with whipped egg whites

This delicious chocolate coffee protein shake only takes a few minutes to make, using ingredients you probably already have in your kitchen. Plus, it has as much high-quality protein as any shake or smoothie you could buy!

That’s why you’ll find me drinking one before or after most of my workouts.

You may notice this shake doesn’t have any protein powder in it. Personally, I love getting my protein from natural sources whenever possible. I do use protein powder for the shakes I drink at the gym (and I love baking with it), but nothing beats a freshly made shake of egg whites… especially when it also includes coffee and cocoa powder!

The whipped egg whites have a consistency like silky whipped cream, and the finished product tastes like a mix between a coffee protein shake and a decadent chocolate dessert. You’ll feel like you’re indulging in a delicious treat when in reality, you’re giving your body so much good stuff!

How to make a low-carb chocolate coffee protein shake

I often make this shake just before my workout. The caffeine is a great energy boost, and the protein is just what my muscles need to grow and recover during and after a hard workout!

Step 1: Blend 2 of the egg whites, a ½ tbsp of Stevia, coffee, cocoa, and 4 ice cubes in a blender until it has the consistency of slush ice.

Step 2: In a separate glass, blend the remaining egg whites and ½ tbsp of stevia until they are stiff and fluffy.

Step 3: Pour the slush ice blend into a high glass and top off with the whipped egg whites.

Step 4: Sprinkle a little cocoa powder on top.

Enjoy! On days when I am not working out, I also enjoy this healthy shake as an alternative to a normal iced coffee, especially on a hot day.

Adding coffee to your shake

Most people turn to coffee for a nice caffeine boost in the morning (or a pick-me-up in the afternoon). However, some people don’t realize that it’s also a great way to energize yourself before a workout!

If you’ve found yourself dragging at the gym, this shake with added caffeine may be just what you need.

I like to use instant coffee powder because it’s so easy to keep on hand and use whenever I need it. Also, I prefer it to brewed coffee when making shakes because brewed coffee can water everything down and dull the flavor.

Using raw eggs

Whipped egg whites add an incredible, silky consistency to your shake, almost like a thick whipped cream. They are really what takes this recipe to the next level!

But if you’re not familiar with using raw eggs whites in shakes, you may be wondering if raw eggs are safe to consume.

According to the US Department of Agriculture, it is safe to eat raw eggs as long as they are pasteurized. So just double-check your egg carton to be sure that the eggs you’re eating are pasteurized, and be sure to check the labels the next time you’re grocery shopping as well!

Storage

I do not recommend storing this shake due to the texture. The egg whites will deflate, giving you more of a runny consistency.

If you want something you can prepare ahead of time and have at the gym, protein shakes using protein powders are the easiest way to make that happen!

This Low-Carb Chocolate Coffee Protein Shake has a silky-smooth consistency with a decadent chocolate and coffee flavor. It's perfect before or after a hard workout, or anytime you need a delicious pick-me-up!
Prep Time: 5 minutes
Total Time: 5 minutes
Servings: 1 serving

Ingredients

  • 4 egg whites (186 g) – use pasteurized liquid egg whites
  • ½ teaspoon instant coffee
  • 2 teaspoon unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 tablespoon Stevia
  • 4 large ice cubes

Instructions

  • Blend 2 of the egg whites, a ½ tbsp of Stevia, coffee, cocoa, and 4 ice cubes in a blender until it has the consistency of slush ice.
  • In a separate glass, blend the remaining egg whites and ½ tbsp of stevia until they are stiff and fluffy.
  • Pour the slush ice blend into a high glass and top off with the whipped egg whites.
  • Sprinkle a little cocoa powder on top.

Notes

This recipe is for one protein shake.
Be sure to buy pasteurized eggs to eliminate the risk of salmonella.
The whipped egg whites will not hold their air for very long, so I do not recommend making this shake ahead of time. The longer it sits, the more it will deflate.
