Bulletproof coffee (also known as fatty coffee or keto coffee) has become very popular in the keto community.

If you haven’t heard this term before, it refers to coffee blended with fats to give you a rich, creamy texture as well as an amazing boost of energy. If it sounds crazy, just trust us and give it a try… there’s a reason so many people are obsessed with it!

Bulletproof is now a well-known keto brand offering pre-mixed coffee drinks that include butter or MCT oil. However, their name has become synonymous with any kind of coffee that includes fats, similar to how we call all facial tissues “Kleenex.”

So if you hear someone talking about bulletproof coffee, they may not actually be referring to the brand. It’s just what we call this style of coffee now.

And this creamy coffee milkshake takes the recipe to a whole new level. It’s a delicious, satisfying way to get a great boost of energy. Plus, it only takes about 5 minutes and 6 simple ingredients to make!

How to make a bulletproof coffee keto milkshake

This recipe is so simple, you pretty much just have to brew, blend, and serve!

Step 1: Brew a cup of black coffee and allow it to cool to room temperature.

Step 2: Add all of the ingredients to a high-speed blender. Blend until the ice has become crushed but not completely melted.

Step 3: Pour into a glass. You can serve as-is or choose to add extra toppings.

Your delicious, low-carb, healthy-fat-packed milkshake is ready! I like to garnish mine with heavy whipping cream and a sprinkle of cinnamon for extra yumminess!

Choosing your coffee for this recipe

When it comes to making your bulletproof shake, you can use any type of coffee that you like! Even instant coffee should work just fine.

Personally, I think you get the best coffee flavor by adding 4 tablespoons of coffee grounds to 3 cups of cold water and leaving it to brew overnight.

In the morning, strain out the coffee grounds and you have delicious cold-brew coffee ready to use!

Of course, you can also get a fancy cold brew coffee set if you want to be more professional about your cold brewing.

Ingredients to use

You’ll typically see butter used in most bulletproof recipes. In fact, that’s why some people call it “butter coffee.” However, butter isn’t ideal in a cold smoothie. It would just firm up and become lumps in the drink, which doesn’t sound very appetizing.

So instead, we can either use MCT oil or just plain coconut oil. You still get all the goodness of adding healthy fats to your coffee while enjoying a delicious low-carb milkshake!

Want to include more flavor? Consider including unsweetened cocoa powder for a chocolate keto coffee shake! You could also replace a tablespoon of MCT oil with a tablespoon of nut butter for a yummy, creamy addition.

Or, to increase the protein content, try adding a scoop of your favorite protein powder! Chocolate or vanilla would be delicious, although you may want to reduce the amount of sweetener in this recipe to adjust for the sweetness of the powder. You could also use unflavored collagen protein, which won’t affect the taste.

Feel free to get creative!

Why drink bulletproof style coffee?

If you’ve never heard of adding fats to your coffee, you may be wondering why someone would want to do this at all.

First, it’s an amazing way to energize your day. The healthy fats slow down the absorption of caffeine, which gives you a longer, more stable burst of energy. No caffeine crash!

Second, it adds tons of flavor without adding sugar or carbs. The smooth, creamy consistency is just irresistible. That’s why so many people love it.

And finally, it gives you a feeling of satiety. That’s why it makes such a great breakfast or afternoon pick-me-up!

If you haven’t tried blending fats into your coffee, I highly recommend giving it a shot. You’ll be amazed how delicious this style of coffee can be… especially when it’s blended into a creamy milkshake!

Storage

You can store your keto milkshake covered in the refrigerator for up to a week.

If you’re prepping this recipe ahead of time, I recommend leaving out the ice. Just blend the rest of the ingredients, then store them in the fridge.

When you are ready to drink the shake, throw the prepared mixture and ice into your blender and blend until just mixed. This method keeps the milkshake from becoming watery and bland from melting ice.
