Avocado Smoothie with Leafy Greens in a glass with spinach, lemon, and an avocado in the background

I love fruit smoothies, but unfortunately, they can pack in more sugar than I would like. Some are nutritious, but some can be as bad for you as eating a candy bar!

I wanted to create a smoothie that was packed with healthy fats and would also help me control my blood sugars. This dairy-free avocado smoothie with leafy greens was just what I was looking for!

This smoothie is not sweet. Instead, it’s creamy, cool, and tangy thanks to the avocado, mint, and lemon. Plus, you get a healthy serving of greens in each glass.

How to make an avocado smoothie with leafy greens

Step 1: Add your spinach, kale, mint, avocado, lemon juice, and water to a high-powered blender. Add the ice cubes last.

Step 2: Blend on high speed until the mixture is smooth.

Divide between two glasses and enjoy!

You can add a few drops of Stevia or a bit of honey if you want to give it some sweetness, but I recommend trying the smoothie first. You may find that you like it without any extra sweetener.

Tips for making the perfect green smoothie

For the perfect texture, make sure your avocado is ripe. This will give you a wonderful, creamy smoothie. If your avocado is too hard, you could end up with a chunky smoothie, which isn’t very appetizing.

I also recommend making the full recipe, even if you only want one serving. Otherwise, there may not be enough volume in your blender to get a smooth consistency.

Just refrigerate the extra and you’ll have tomorrow’s breakfast or a snack ready to go!

To save some time, you don’t need to bother measuring the greens. A cup of greens is a couple of handfuls, so just grab what you want and throw it in! And there’s no need to remove the stems, the blender will take care of that for you.

You’re also welcome to use whatever greens you like (or happen to have on hand). I’ve tried various combinations of spinach, romaine, and kale and each one has turned out well.

Storage

If you have any leftover green smoothie, you can store it covered in the refrigerator for 3-4 days.

If the smoothie has separated at all, you can throw it back in the blender to get it back to the perfect texture!

  • 2 cups baby spinach
  • 1 cup baby kale
  • 2 mint sprigs
  • 1 avocado, (peeled and seed removed)
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice, (freshly squeezed)
  • 2 cups water
  • ½ cup ice cubes

Instructions

  • Add your spinach, kale, mint, avocado, lemon juice, and water to a high-powered blender. Add the ice cubes last.
2 cups baby spinach, 1 cup baby kale, 2 mint sprigs, 1 avocado, 1 tablespoon lemon juice, 2 cups water, ½ cup ice cubes
  • Blend on high speed until the mixture is smooth.
  • Optional: You can a few drops of Stevia to make the smoothie sweeter

Notes

This recipe is for 2 servings of avocado green smoothie.
If you’d like to add a touch of sweetness, try a few drops of stevia or a tiny bit of honey.
You can substitute the greens used with whatever you like (or have on hand).
Don’t halve the recipe, you need enough volume in the blender to get the smooth consistency. If you only want one serving, I recommend making both servings and then refrigerating one for later.
This smoothie can be stored covered in the refrigerator for 3-4 days.
