Avocado smoothie ingredients

This nutritious and refreshing smoothie comes together with a handful of healthy ingredients.

Ingredients for the avocado smoothie on a table
  • Baby spinach — This mild leafy green blends well and adds fiber, vitamins, and a bright green color to the smoothie.
  • Baby kale — Adds a slightly earthy flavor and a big boost of nutrients. Baby kale is more tender and milder than mature kale, making it better for a smoothie.
  • Mint — Gives the smoothie its cool, refreshing taste to balance the richness of the avocado.
  • Avocado — Is a dairy-free way to add creaminess for a smooth, satisfying texture with a boost of healthy fats.
  • Lemon juice — I recommend freshly squeezed lemon to brighten the flavor and add a touch of acidity to balance the creaminess.
  • Water — Adjust the amount for your desired thickness.
  • Ice cubes — This helps thicken and chill the smoothie.
  • Stevia — Optional if you want to make the smoothie sweeter.

How to make an avocado smoothie with leafy greens

  • Add the spinach, kale, mint, avocado, lemon juice, and water to a high-powered blender. Add the ice cubes last.
  • Blend on high speed until the mixture is smooth.
  • Pour into a glass.

Enjoy!

Recipe tips and tricks

  • Blend the smoothie on high speed to ensure the greens are fully incorporated and the texture is creamy.
  • Taste and adjust the lemon juice based on how tart you want the smoothie.

Substitutions and variations

  • You can swap baby spinach for arugula or Swiss chard for a different leafy green flavor.
  • I sometimes use coconut water instead of plain water for a touch of natural sweetness and extra nutrients.
  • If you want some protein, add a scoop of vanilla protein powder.

What to eat with this recipe

Looking for a quick bite to enjoy with your nutritious smoothie? I like pairing this drink with date almond energy bites or peanut butter protein balls.

If it’s first thing in the morning, I like having an oatmeal muffin with pumpkin seeds and nuts for a well-rounded breakfast.

For a savory option, keto egg muffins are great to make head. A low-sodium spinach quiche would also be delicious!

Storage and freezing

  • If you have any leftover green smoothie, you can store it covered in the refrigerator for 3-4 days. If it separates, just throw it black in the blender to get that creamy texture.
  • I wouldn’t recommend storing in the freezer since the smoothie will freeze solid and be difficult to blend.

This avocado smoothie with leafy greens is a great way to add some healthy fats to your diet. Plus, it’s so easy to make — just toss everything in a blender!
Prep Time: 10 minutes
Total Time: 10 minutes
Servings: 2

Ingredients

  • 2 cups baby spinach
  • 1 cup baby kale
  • 2 mint sprigs
  • 1 avocado, (peeled and seed removed)
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice, (freshly squeezed)
  • 2 cups water
  • ½ cup ice cubes

Instructions

  • Add your spinach, kale, mint, avocado, lemon juice, and water to a high-powered blender. Add the ice cubes last.
2 cups baby spinach, 1 cup baby kale, 2 mint sprigs, 1 avocado, 1 tablespoon lemon juice, 2 cups water, ½ cup ice cubes
  • Blend on high speed until the mixture is smooth.
  • Optional: You can a few drops of Stevia to make the smoothie sweeter

Notes

This recipe is for 2 servings of avocado green smoothie.
If you’d like to add a touch of sweetness, try a few drops of stevia or a tiny bit of honey.
You can substitute the greens used with whatever you like (or have on hand).
Don’t halve the recipe, you need enough volume in the blender to get the smooth consistency. If you only want one serving, I recommend making both servings and then refrigerating one for later.
This smoothie can be stored covered in the refrigerator for 3-4 days.
